2023 / Willow Creek District Trivia

"GSM blends" from the Paso Robles Willow Creek District are renowned and the additional fruit we kept from our vineyard in 2023 allowed us to expand Decemil's GSM lineup. Trivia ("TRY-via"), is a 65/20/15 blend of Mourvèdre, Syrah and Grenache. Trivia delivers smoothness in a medium bodied wine with a touch of sweet aromas. Trivia saw 15-1/2 months of oak aging in a combination of 228L barrels and 500L puncheons and averaged 22% new oak.

The 2023 Trivia was painstakingly curated with organic farming practices, small-batch winemaking and a reverence for site expression:

  • A blend of Decemil’s Mourvèdre, Syrah and Grenache blocks
  • Calcareous limestone and clay loam
  • Elevation range of 1,015 to 1,300 feet
  • 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean
  • Organically farmed vines

Vinification

  • A uniquely Mourvèdre-driven blend with a style all its own
  • Comparatively cool conditions during the 2023 ripening season allowed for long hang time, with the lead variety Mourvèdre staying on the vine until late October
  • Blended at the 6-month mark of varietal aging
  • Returned to barrels for 10 additional months of maturation
  • Aged for a total of 16 months in an average of 22% new oak

Analysis

  • Alc. 14.1%
  • TA .57

Tasting
Notes

The 2023 Trivia (TRY-via) is a blend that signifies the fateful convergence of three Rhône varieties—Mourvèdre (65%), Syrah (20%) and Grenache (15%). Warm scents of violet, plum, cherry and dried herb reveal suggestions of graham, cocoa and vanilla. The Mourvèdre-driven mouthfeel is earthy and expansive, offering crunchy textures with vivid flavors of cranberry, black cherry, red currant, dusty mineral and thyme leaf. A lasting impression is made with fine acidity and enduring freshness, making Trivia a blend worth savoring.

Reviews, Kind Words &

Accolades

Aromas of mountain berries, turned earth, baking spices and star anise are followed by propulsive flavors of structured blackberries, black raspberries and mulberries that sweep in with a dusting of cocoa powder and minerals. A hit of bouquet garni in the mouthwatering finish. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Trivia is a wine I loved, showing ripe red and blue fruits, beetroot, sappy flowers, and peppery nuances. Medium to full-bodied, it has a fresh, focused, elegant mouthfeel, nicely balanced tannins, and a great finish…….. this elegant, pure, incredibly seductive 2023 has tons to love. Drink 2025-2035.
